The power of READING
Proverb by Frida Kahlo
Angelica Ozuna
When I was six I would memorize poetry from my two older brothers' school reading books. I started loving reading since then.
Happy Readings, everyone!

Module 3 - Genre: Traditional TalesTitle: La Verdadera Historia de los Tres Cerditos (The True Story of the Three Little Pigs) Author: Jon Sciezka This is a fun story with a number of double meanings, which some witty students will comment on. This version of the story, is presented with a spin-off as the story is told by Mr. Wolf. The wolf declares that he was framed. All the buzz about him being a mean bad wolf was a made-up story from the media. Students enjoy listening to this story and trying to justify Mr. Wolf's side of the story allowing him the benefit of the doubt. At the same time, students realize that Mr. Wolf might be covering up on his defense. |
If you are bilingual, Spanish-English speaker, you are in for a treat in this version of the story. Let's find si tu tambien vacilas on siding with Sr. Lobo. Enjoy! Hover over the image, click and play the Read Aloud video. |

Module 5 - Contemporary Realistic Fiction |
Title: THE HUNDRED DRESSES
Author: ELEANOR ESTER
Written Review
This story can relate to many students who have moved from school to school and begin their challenging, and sometimes unsuccessful, self given task to make new friends. Things can become even more difficult when that student looks, acts, speaks, dresses, or has a unique name, different than every one else.
Eleanor Ester, Newbery award winner, The Hundred Dresses will introduce the reader to Wanda Petronsky. Wanda is a new girl in school. She's humble and very poor and has a history of moving often from school to school. This time, again, Wanda is only passing by. And, again, she fails to make any friends.
Bullying in school is so present and the different forms to deal with these incidents has not ceased, I would say it has "expanded" into technology "aka" cyberbullying. Perhaps reading aloud books, such as this will persuade a victim to come forward and ask for help. Maybe the bully can understand about empathy and turn his/her behavior to a better choice.

Module 6 - Genre: Historical Fiction and Nonfiction
"Her"storical Fiction and Nonfiction
For my display, I created a physical form of stories about influential women in history but also some fiction stories about female characters who demonstrated courage, perseverance, and maturity.
This is a definite book to share during the study of California's Natives and the Mission system. The narrator's description of the settings, the voice of the main character, and the actions are vividly detailed that it is easy to travel along with Paquala in the journey that will change her life forever.
Pasquala was not her birth name. She was given this name when she was baptized by the Padre in Mission Santa Ines.
On their long way back from the sea, Pasquala becomes ill. At this point and still a long way from their village, her parents are forced to make the devastating decision to stay behind and separate from their people. It is here that Pasquala begins her life as a neophyte child living and working in the mission. Will she ever go back to her people?
A strong recommendation for all fourth grade teachers as a whole class read aloud.

Module 8 - Genre: Informational & Biographies
Pura Bulpre award winner, Monica Brown did an excellent work presenting information about Frida Kahlo in picture-biography book Frida Kahlo and her Animalitos.
The information in this story is basic, yet enough to teach primary students about some Frida's work. The story shows Frida painting her animal pets (animalitos) and living among them. Students also learn about perseverance. Brown included information about Frida's love for painting despite her years of physical pain. Monica depicts the importance of Frida's animals in her work and in her life. This is a great book to introduce biographies and direct drawing. Attached is my CLCollectionDevelopmentList |
